De-Oiled Rice Bran (DORB) Exporter from India
De-oiled rice bran — a protein/fibre feed ingredient whose export was banned July 2023–October 2025 and is now Free again.
Quick answer: De-Oiled Rice Bran (DORB) is a cattle and poultry feed ingredient — the solid residue left after oil extraction from rice bran. India banned DORB export from July 2023 until DGFT Notification No. 37/2025-26, dated 3 October 2025, lifted the ban and returned it to Free export status. Because of that ban, calendar-2024 export data (shown below) is not representative of real demand — it reflects a legal prohibition, not buyer disinterest. Green Plus EXIM can now supply DORB for export; get in touch for current terms.
DORB export is free again — here's what changed
India prohibited the export of de-oiled rice bran (DORB) from July 2023, as part of a broader set of measures to manage domestic feed and edible-oil-industry supply during a period of food-price sensitivity. That ban stayed in place for a little over two years. DGFT Notification No. 37/2025-26, dated 3 October 2025, lifted the ban and returned DORB to Free export status.
If you were sourcing DORB from India before 2023, or have been watching for the ban to lift, this is the update: Green Plus EXIM can now quote and supply DORB for export.
DORB vs raw rice bran: don't conflate the two
This distinction matters because the two products carry different export terms. De-oiled rice bran (DORB) — the defatted residue after oil is solvent-extracted from raw bran, classified under HS 2306.90 (and 2302.40 in some reporting) — is the product the October 2025 notification freed. Raw or boiled rice bran — a separate product under HS 2302.20, typically used as an input for oil extraction rather than as a finished feed ingredient — remains export-Restricted, permitted only under licence. If a supplier offers you "rice bran" without specifying which, ask — the two are not interchangeable commercially or regulatorily.
Reading the trade data below — a caution
The export figures in the table below cover calendar-2024, which falls entirely inside the export-ban window. The roughly USD 0.42 million total is a measure of the ban's effectiveness, not of real demand — genuine post-ban trade volumes aren't visible in Comtrade data yet as of this page's last update. Nepal, Bangladesh and other feed-import-dependent regional markets are the natural destinations once normal trade resumes, based on pre-ban trade patterns and regional feed demand, but treat any current DORB market-sizing claim (from us or anyone else) with appropriate skepticism until fresh post-ban data is available.
How should I specify DORB?
- Protein and fibre. 14–16% crude protein and up to 12–14% crude fibre are typical. Confirm your feed formulation's tolerance.
- Sand/silica content. This varies meaningfully by processing quality — specify your maximum tolerance explicitly rather than accepting a generic "export quality" claim.
- Freshness/turnover. DORB is more prone to rancidity than whole grains due to residual oil content — plan your shipment and storage timeline accordingly.

Key facts
- DORB export ban (July 2023 – 3 October 2025) has been LIFTED — DGFT Notification No. 37/2025-26
- HS code: 2306.90 / 2302.40 (DORB) — distinct from raw/boiled rice bran (2302.20), which remains Restricted
- Typical spec: 14–16% crude protein, up to 12–14% crude fibre
- Packed in 25–50 kg bags or jumbo bags; ~18–20 MT per 20ft container
- Sourced from rice-milling clusters: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana
- 2024 trade data reflects the ban period — not a demand indicator; treat pre-ban and post-ban market sizing separately

Packaging & container loading
| Detail | Options |
|---|---|
| Packaging | 25 kg and 50 kg PP bags; 1 MT jumbo bags (FIBC); bulk vessel loading for large contracts |
| Minimum order quantity | 1 × 20ft container; trial orders discussed |
| Loading capacity (20ft) | Approx. 18–20 MT in a 20ft container (bagged — DORB is a low-bulk-density material) |
| Loading capacity (40ft) | Approx. 22–24 MT in a 40ft container |
| Shelf life & storage | 3–6 months in cool, dry, well-ventilated storage; DORB is more prone to rancidity than whole grains, so turnover matters |

Where India exports rice bran / de-oiled rice bran (dorb)
India's top destination markets for rice bran / de-oiled rice bran (dorb) (HS 2302.40 (bran/sharps of other cereals); de-oiled rice bran also moves under 2306.90 per DGFT Notification 37/2025-26), 2024 (calendar year). India exported $417,150 of rice bran / de-oiled rice bran (dorb) worldwide that year:

Notes on this data
CRITICAL CONTEXT — DO NOT READ THIS AS MARKET DEMAND. The figures are primary-tier (WITS/UN Comtrade) and accurate, but calendar-2024 falls ENTIRELY INSIDE India's DORB export ban, which ran from July 2023 until it was lifted on 3 October 2025 (DGFT Notification No. 37/2025-26). The tiny USD 0.42M total therefore reflects a legal prohibition, not absence of buyer demand. Post-ban trade is not yet visible in 2024 data. Any content on DORB must (a) lead with the fact that export is now FREE again, (b) explicitly avoid citing 2024 volumes as indicative, and (c) be refreshed once calendar-2026 data publishes. See also the companion file other-oilcake-230690, which captures the 2306.90 stream the same notification references.
Indian sourcing regions
DORB is a by-product of India's rice-milling and solvent-extraction industry, concentrated in the major rice-producing and -processing states — Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana. Supply tracks rice milling activity, which runs close to year-round given India's multiple rice-growing seasons.

De-Oiled Rice Bran (DORB) export FAQs
Yes. India banned DORB export from July 2023 to manage domestic feed and oil-industry supply; the ban was lifted on 3 October 2025 via DGFT Notification No. 37/2025-26, which moved DORB back to Free export status. As with other agricultural feed inputs that have carried restrictions before, we recommend confirming current terms at the time of your order.
DORB (de-oiled rice bran) is what remains after oil is solvent-extracted from raw rice bran — it's the defatted, protein/fibre-rich residue used in cattle and poultry feed. This is a distinct product and a distinct HS classification from raw or boiled rice bran (HS 2302.20), which is not the export ban that was lifted — raw/boiled rice bran export remains Restricted, permitted only under licence. Don't assume the two trade under the same terms.
Because calendar-2024 falls entirely inside the July 2023–October 2025 export ban — the roughly USD 0.42M shown in the table below is what leaked through narrow exceptions, not a reflection of real buyer demand. Nepal, Bangladesh and other regional markets are the natural volume destinations for DORB once trade normalises; 2024 figures should not be read as a demand signal.
14–16% crude protein is typical, alongside meaningful crude fibre content (up to 12–14%). It's valued as a feed ingredient more for its fibre and residual-nutrient content and cost-effectiveness than as a high-protein input like soybean meal or fish meal.
Roughly 18–20 MT bagged in a 20ft container — lower than a denser feed ingredient like soybean meal, because DORB has a lower bulk density. Ask about bulk vessel loading for larger contracts.
More so than whole grains — residual oil content, even after solvent extraction, can lead to rancidity over time. We recommend planning shipments around reasonably prompt turnover (3–6 months) rather than long-term storage.
